Something I have to get off my chest

I seriously wonder if Christ really needs our help staying in Christmas. I mean, is that our job? Did Jesus ever actually get out of Christmas, and if so, are we really going to be able to get him back in?

Is saying “holiday” (which just means “holy day”) that bad of a thing? And if people have only been saying “Merry Christmas” for 150 years or so, does that make the preceding 1850 years woefully inadequate?

When do we get most upset about this? Is it as we’re checking out of a store where we’ve just spent some of the $450 billion that Americans will splurge on to celebrate the inbreaking of God’s just & righteous presence…err, Jesus’ birthday? (In comparison, it would only take $10 billion to ensure clean water for every human being in the world, and $13 billion to keep folks from going hungry.)

How about something different. What if we spend some time on ACTING CHRISTLIKE than on these rabbit-hole issues such as what trite salutation we trot out 1 month a year?

Deep breath.

Okay, rant over. You can break out the flamethrowers now…

Today I ran down a somewhat similar thought path and wondered “If we need to put the Christ back in Christmas, do we Protestants need to put the mass back in Christmas as well?”

I didn’t explore it too far.

  2. Keep up the good rant! Does Jesus need us to defend him? I don’t think so. Seems one way that we avoid the message and life of the Christ is to focus on the person Jesus. Peace.

Love your rant! I think many who nitpick over this issue are the same ones who like to show who knows the most Bible verses, etc. but have no idea how to truly live a Christian life. Often treat others very badly but never see the error of their ways.

The ones who rant about not saying saying merry Christmas are probably the same who have massive credit card debt from buying a ton of junk.
